Understanding Test Results

Interpreting a result requires more than looking at a number. Scores often have meaning only when compared with a reference population, threshold, or expected range. A result near a cutoff may require additional investigation, particularly when the consequences of a decision are significant.

It is also important to distinguish between a positive result and a confirmed condition. Tests can produce false positives, in which a result suggests an issue that is not present, and false negatives, in which a test fails to detect an issue that exists. Sensitivity, specificity, error rates, and the circumstances in which the test was used all affect its practical value.
